Assistance with Activities of Daily Living

Eating

Eating refers to one’s ability to feed themselves but not their ability to prepare meals. Assistance can range from just cutting up food, to pureeing their meals, or to ultimately feeding the client.

Bathing

Personal hygiene includes grooming, bathing or showering, oral care, and nail care. Assistance may range from Stand-By (being there in case the client feels unsteady getting in or out of the shower, or if they may need unanticipated help during their shower) to Hands-On (where the caregiver may wash a client’s back and feet to thoroughly bathing the client).

Dressing

Independent dressing is the ability of the client to make appropriate clothing choices and physically dress or undress. Assistance on any level constitutes Hands-On Assistance, like helping them pick a summer out ft when they want to wear heavy pants and a winter sweater.

Toileting

Toileting and Continence include having cognitive and physical use of the bathroom facilities.

Ability to get on and off the toilet

Ability to cleaning oneself

Includes Foley catheter and Colostomy bag care

Incontinence Care

Changing clothes when soiled

Changing disposable undergarments (Depends™ or diapers)

Using special pads in the bed to protect sheets and mattress from urine or feces.

Transferring/Mobility

Transferring is the act of standing, moving from the bed to a lounge chair, or from a wheelchair to a bed.

A caregiver can use a Gait Belt to aide a client in standing.

Transfers can be accomplished by using a Hoyer Lift or a Sit to Stand Lift.

Mobility is the ability to move around, like walking or running.

Some forms of mobility aids include the use of crutches, canes, and walkers.

Other aids include wheelchairs or using a Gait Belt to steady a client when walking.
